Inmates Endure Harsh Realities in Trinidad’s Overcrowded Prisons

A TikTok video recently brought attention to the troubling conditions faced by inmates in Trinidad and Tobago’s prison system. Many detainees are left to navigate life on remand in harsh environments, marred by overcrowding and a lack of resources. Inmates report being housed alongside those convicted of serious crimes, raising concerns over safety and mental health.

Current reports indicate that the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service struggles with proper classification of detainees due to limited facilities. The Ministry of National Security allocates only a small portion of its budget to prisons, resulting in insufficient funding to address the needs of those incarcerated.

Food quality has also become a pressing issue, with inmates describing their meals as barely edible. With approximately $120 million spent on feeding around 4,000 inmates annually, the nutritional value of meals has significantly declined, leading to a daily survival struggle among those held behind bars. Concerns about sanitation and welfare continue to grow, as the design of prisons often fails to support the fundamental notion of presumed innocence for remandees.

As Trinidad and Tobago grapples with these systemic issues, the lingering impacts on families left behind and the stigma surrounding incarceration remain critical topics for discussion.
