Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has expressed concerns regarding the democratic framework and national unity in Guyana during his address on the 60th Independence Anniversary. He highlighted the risks that arise when citizens lose confidence in public institutions, stating that true independence cannot exist alongside civic intimidation.
In his speech, Mohamed emphasized that a functioning democracy necessitates an environment where citizens can exercise their constitutional rights and question authority without fear of repercussions. He pointed out the importance of maintaining a healthy civic space, arguing that state institutions should remain independent from executive influence to effectively serve the national interest.
He remarked, “A nation cannot call itself truly free when people are afraid to speak, question, or stand up for themselves.” Mohamed noted that frustrations among the populace are growing across various regions, with some citizens feeling inadequately protected by the rule of law and unfairly treated in terms of state resources. He warned that failing to address these structural imbalances could lead to a culture of compliance that suppresses public discourse.
“Gradually, and dangerously, corruption, fear, and dictatorship begin to normalize themselves within society,” he stated. However, he also acknowledged a positive development, indicating that a grassroots counter-movement is emerging as citizens increasingly seek to transcend traditional partisan divisions.
Mohamed observed, “People are beginning to reject division and fear, rediscovering their identity as Guyanese first.” He stressed that a sustainable future for the nation cannot be built on racial division or political victimization.
Furthermore, he addressed the Guyanese diaspora, recognizing their contributions to local communities and urging collaboration to create an equitable economic landscape that encourages the younger generation to remain in the country. He concluded by asserting that the true measure of Guyana’s maturity at sixty years of independence lies in its commitment to justice, transparency, and dignity in public administration.
