President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has stated that Guyana’s rapid economic growth has brought the country to a pivotal moment where the effectiveness of progress will be assessed based on how the nation’s wealth benefits its citizens. During a recent address, he noted that Guyana is entering a new phase of development that requires responsibility, fairness, and collective maturity.
President Ali remarked, “Today we stand in a new transitional phase shaped by extraordinary wealth and rapid economic growth.” He acknowledged the country’s expanding economy and infrastructure but emphasized that development should not be evaluated solely on financial metrics. Instead, it should be measured by its impact on the lives of citizens throughout the nation.
He posed a critical question regarding how Guyana will utilize its growing prosperity and whether this wealth can generate opportunities for all citizens. “Maybe, just maybe, this period is another test of ours to see how we take care of it, how we use it, how humble we are with it,” he stated.
Dr. Ali asserted that the ongoing transformation of the country must be guided by principles of inclusion, justice, and equal opportunity. He questioned, “Can we transform wealth into opportunity for all?” emphasizing that the answer lies in national unity and shared progress.
Reflecting on Guyana’s historical journey, he noted that the nation has progressed through colonialism, political independence, and nation-building, and is now entering a phase focused on economic and human development. He cautioned that economic success alone will not determine the country’s future, highlighting that national progress must also be assessed by dignity, fairness, and quality of life.
President Ali concluded by stating that the true challenge for Guyana is not just economic expansion, but achieving national maturity. He expressed confidence that the country can successfully navigate this transformative period if its citizens remain dedicated to collaborative efforts for national development.
