A failed supermarket robbery in South Oropouche on Monday, April 13, 2026, has led to the arrest of a 20-year-old man, Amit Ammir Khan, also known as ‘Chulo’. Reports state that Khan, a regular customer at Carnival Supermarket, was recognised by staff members despite his attempt to conceal his identity with a cloth.
Moving initially as an ordinary shopper, Khan proceeded to the back of the supermarket where he covered his face and head, before approaching the counter with what appeared to be a weapon. Fearing for his safety, the cashier complied with Khan’s demand for cash and items, handing over money and several bottles of high-end liquor.
However, Khan’s escape was thwarted by officers from the South Western Division Emergency Response Unit, who were on patrol in the area. They intercepted Khan as he attempted to exit the supermarket. On searching his belongings, they discovered cash, multiple bottles of premium alcohol, and a bag containing items including a machete blade and other tools.
CCTV footage, which recorded Khan’s unmasked entrance and subsequent attempt to conceal his identity, is expected to form a significant part of the ongoing investigation. Khan remains in police custody as enquiries continue.
