Nearly four years following the tragic Paria Fuel Trading pipeline incident in Trinidad and Tobago, the government has initiated the issuance of the previously pledged ex-gratia payments to victims and a survivor. The Minister of Energy and Energy Industries, Dr. Roodal Moonilal, confirmed that $1 million ex-gratia payments have been made to the families of two deceased divers and the lone survivor, Christopher Boodram. The incident, which resulted in the death of four divers during maintenance work, triggered national outrage and a Commission of Inquiry, revealing significant failures in safety protocols and oversight within the energy sector. The payments are a fulfillment of a promise under Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s administration. Legal discussions are in progress with the families of the remaining victims, with the expectation that they will also receive their ex-gratia payments.
