Government to Introduce Crime Reduction Zones

The government has announced plans to introduce Zones of Special Operations (ZOSOs), similar to systems in place in Jamaica, as part of a strategy to maintain recent reductions in crime rates. Jamaica implemented ZOSOs in 2017 to tackle high crime rates in specific regions through enhanced security and community development. The ZOSO legislation targets crime hotspots without resorting to a state of emergency. Attorney General John Jeremie stated that the legislation, currently being considered, intends to offer a proportional response to threats, focusing on specific hotspots rather than a nationwide state of emergency. The ZOSOs will operate under strict parameters, with checks, controls, and judicial oversight in place. Last year, Trinidad and Tobago recorded its lowest murder rate since 2014, with additional declines in serious and violent crimes, larceny, and fatal road traffic accidents.
