Deposed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is due to appear in an American courtroom on narco-terrorism charges, marking his first appearance since his capture and transfer to New York by the Trump administration. Maduro and his wife are scheduled for a brief, mandatory legal proceeding which is expected to initiate a lengthy legal battle over his potential trial in the U.S. His legal team is set to challenge the legitimacy of his arrest, citing his immunity as a sovereign leader of a foreign state, a status not recognized by the U.S. Maduro, his wife, son and three others are charged with colluding with drug cartels to smuggle thousands of tons of cocaine into the U.S., a crime punishable by life imprisonment.
