Former Minister of Works and Transport, Rohan Sinanan, has criticized the Government’s new traffic fine regime, stating that it prioritizes revenue collection over road safety. Sinanan expressed concern over the recently increased fines, which he believes are more focused on generating revenue than promoting behavioural change among drivers. He asserts that the high fines, some of which run into thousands of dollars, are not feasible for many citizens and will not deter reckless driving. Instead, he predicts a surge in unpaid fines and no improvement in road safety. Sinanan argues that the Government’s approach is flawed due to its overreliance on monetary penalties, particularly in a society marked by economic inequality. He advocates for a return to policies centered on behavioural change, technology-driven enforcement, and license accountability.
