PSA Advocates for Reinstatement of 26 Contract Workers

The Public Service Association (PSA) is advocating for the reemployment of 26 contract workers previously hired under HDC’s Subsidiary-construction company limited. Despite assurances of contract continuation till December 2025, these employees, including supervisors, project assistants, and senior project engineers, found themselves jobless earlier this year. Feeroz Khan, HDC chairman, justified the dismissals as a necessary step to aid the organization’s financial recovery, which has suffered losses over $700 million and monthly overheads of $40 million in the past two years. He stressed that workforce expansion was unsustainable and financially burdensome. Despite the layoffs, he assured that HDC would still fulfill its mandate of developing 20,000 homes in the next 5 years. As the PSA fights for job security for these workers, HDC stands firm on its decision, citing financial responsibility and efficiency. This situation underscores the precarious nature of contract employment in the public sector, sparking conversations about the potential permanency of these roles.
