Kamla Rebuffs Rowley’s Claims on US-T&T Military Cooperation

Former Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley recently questioned Trinidad and Tobago’s military cooperation with the United States during a live press briefing on Facebook. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar promptly responded, assuring the public of no threat and correcting ‘misplaced concerns’ raised by Rowley. She clarified that Rowley himself had signed the updated Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) last year, an agreement that outlines U.S.-T&T cooperation in regional training exercises, not warfare. She emphasized that Trinidad and Tobago remains a sovereign state, not a follower of Washington, CARICOM, or any geopolitical bloc, and will not allow its territory to be used for offensive military action. She also asserted that T&T’s foreign policy is guided by national interest, not external forces.
