The 39th Tone River Fireworks Festival took place on September 19 along the Tone River in Sakai, Ibaraki Prefecture. Despite intermittent rain, approximately 30,000 fireworks, including star mines and large-scale shells, were launched in synchronization with music.
The event featured displays from six prominent fireworks companies. This included four firms known for their award-winning history: Nomura Fireworks Industry from Mito, Yamazaki Fireworks Manufacturing from Tsukuba, Beniya Aoki Fireworks from Nagano, and Marugo from Yamanashi. Additionally, Marutamaya Ogatsu Fireworks from Tokyo and Wakino Art Factory from Kitakyushu participated as special guests.
According to the Sakai Hometown Festival Executive Committee, the event drew an estimated 300,000 attendees. Representatives from the town’s international partners also attended, including officials from Boryeong, South Korea, which signed a friendship city agreement with Sakai in May, as well as delegates from sister cities such as Honolulu, Hawaii, and Marikina, Philippines.
