TTPS Commissioner Warns Against Misinformation in Investigations

Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro has issued a strong warning about the damaging effects of misinformation on active police investigations, stressing that the spread of false or premature information can severely hinder law enforcement operations.

Speaking during a recent media briefing, Commissioner Guevarro said investigators have faced increasing challenges due to the circulation of unverified claims and sensitive material on social media platforms.

One such case involved the disappearance of two-year-old Angelo Tobias in Tobago, where CCTV footage linked to the investigation was leaked online before investigators completed their analysis. According to the TTPS, the circulation of the footage resulted in numerous false leads and diverted critical resources away from ongoing search efforts.

The Commissioner also referenced the investigation into the death of Acting Corporal Anuska Eversley, where inaccurate reports surrounding the alleged involvement of municipal police vehicles created confusion and misinformation among the public.

Commissioner Guevarro urged citizens to exercise responsibility when sharing information online and emphasized the importance of allowing investigators to carry out their duties without unnecessary interference.

“When evidence provided to the police is then circulated on social media, speculation often follows, and that can negatively impact investigations,” the Commissioner stated.

He also called on members of the media to verify information before publication to avoid compromising sensitive operations.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service continues to coordinate with several agencies, including the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force, Special Branch, and the Cyber Crime Unit, as investigations into multiple high-profile matters continue.

Despite the challenges posed by misinformation, the TTPS said investigators have made significant progress in several cases, including the recovery of firearms linked to the San Fernando investigation.

Commissioner Guevarro concluded by encouraging members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activity to the authorities, noting that timely and accurate information remains vital in combating crime and ensuring public safety.
