Trump says the U.S. will escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz starting tomorrow

Donald Trump has announced that the United States will begin escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz starting tomorrow, under an operation dubbed ‘Project Freedom.’ This move comes after multiple countries requested U.S. assistance to ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the increasingly dangerous waterway, amid rising tensions with Iran.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump characterized the mission as a humanitarian effort intended to protect nations, companies, and civilians affected by the ongoing regional conflict. He issued a stern warning that any interference with U.S. guided ship movements would be met with a forceful response.

The announcement follows a worrying incident where a cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz was attacked by small craft, as reported by the British military. This has led the International Maritime Organization to condemn such attacks and advocate for the protection of innocent seafarers in the region.

While a fragile ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran is currently in place, uncertainty looms over the potential for a long-term peace agreement. Trump stated he is reviewing a recent proposal from Tehran aimed at resolving the conflict but expressed skepticism regarding its acceptability. Additionally, he left open the possibility of renewed military action against Iran if necessary.

Since the escalation of hostilities, Iran has significantly restricted foreign shipping in the Strait, while the U.S. has upheld a blockade in the area. As a result, reports indicate that Iranian oil exports have plummeted nearly 70 percent since the blockade commenced, and oil prices fell by about 2 percent following Trump’s announcement on the escort operation.
