Trinidad and Tobago Declares State of Emergency

On March 3, 2026, a State of Emergency (SoE) was declared in Trinidad and Tobago, as announced by Prime Minister Kamla-Persad Bissessar. This decision was triggered by the increasing violent criminal activity across the nation, particularly by organized criminal gangs. The National Security Council (NSC) highlighted that the violence has resulted in multiple fatalities and poses a serious threat to public safety. Intelligence suggests that police officers, prison officers, and other security and legal service members are under threat of attack. The Prime Minister has warned criminal gangs and recently released detainees that further criminal behavior would result in severe measures. She stressed that anyone supporting these criminals would also face consequences. This SoE is part of the government’s zero-tolerance approach to crime and follows a series of strategic operations, legislative measures, and criminal justice system reforms.
