Teen Barber: 13-Year-Old Trinidadian Boy Earns International Barbering Certification

At an age when many young people are spending their vacation on phones, social media and video games, 13-year-old Santana Courtney Barrett has achieved something that could benefit him for years to come.

Santana recently completed the International Barbering Foundation Programme at Boom Champion Barber Academy, earning her official certification after successfully completing the academy’s structured hands-on training programme.

His achievement highlights the growing interest among young people in learning practical skills that can eventually lead to entrepreneurship, self-employment and income generation. Barbering has evolved into a thriving profession, with skilled barbers operating successful businesses, building loyal client bases and creating careers that can take them anywhere in the world.

Through the programme, Santana received training in clipper safety, barbering fundamentals, grooming, beginner fade techniques, professionalism and customer interaction. The programme is designed for students aged 10 and older and requires no prior experience, making it accessible to young people interested in developing a valuable trade from an early age.

According to Boom Champion Barber Academy, the focus extends beyond teaching haircutting techniques. Students are encouraged to develop discipline, confidence, responsibility and a professional mindset while learning a skill that can potentially provide lifelong opportunities.

As more parents seek meaningful activities for their children during the school vacation, programmes like these offer an alternative to excessive screen time while exposing young people to real-world skills and business opportunities.

The academy’s Summer Youth Barbering Programme 2026 is now accepting registrations for its next intake beginning Monday 6th July 2026.

The programme is open to students aged 10 and older and will be held in Curepe and Princes Town. Sessions run on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Participants receive hands-on training, access to all tools required during the programme, a student workbook, barbering eBook and a Certificate of Participation upon completion.

The investment is TT$2,500, with an easy two-part payment option available. Scholarship opportunities are also offered to top-performing students.

Parents interested in helping their children develop confidence, discipline and a marketable skill are encouraged to register early as spaces are limited.
