Sabita Bastio Rescued After Seven-Year Ordeal of Alleged Captivity

Sabita Bastio’s dramatic rescue from seven years of alleged captivity has sparked widespread concern and investigations in Trinidad and Tobago. Bastio, reportedly held against her will, endured years of abuse until public scrutiny prompted a police intervention that led to her freedom. Her son, whose identity is withheld due to his age, spoke about the emotional reunion with his mother and detailed the painful experiences she faced during her captivity.

The case gained significant traction on social media, drawing public outcry. This led Commissioner of Police Alistister Guo to swiftly mobilize a team of officers tasked with locating Bastio. The police efforts bore fruit when Bastio was brought into a police station by a woman and her teenage son. Currently in the care of relatives, Bastio is receiving medical treatment as she starts her recovery journey.

According to accounts Bastio’s family was under the impression that she had been working as a domestic helper, a role they believed she pursued willingly. However, the reality was much grimmer. Her sons, especially distressed due to their mother’s prolonged absence, attempted to visit her but were met with resistance and violence.

As investigations continue, police have held a woman and her teenage son in custody. However, no charges have yet been filed as the investigation relies heavily on ongoing interviews conducted by the victim and witness support unit. Efforts to reach Vanana Moit, the Minister of Social Development, for a statement on the case were unsuccessful.

While the exact circumstances of Bastio’s ordeal are still emerging, this case underscores the critical role of public awareness and law enforcement responsiveness in addressing issues of human rights violations. The community now waits for legal proceedings to unfold, hoping for justice and accountability while Sabita Bastio begins to rebuild her life.
