Israel B. Khan, SC, President of the Criminal Bar Association, seeks a formal investigation into allegations made by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, stating that two independent senators asked for personal favours in return for their support for the Zones of Special Operations (ZOSO) legislation. According to the Prime Minister, these senators approached a senior government senator during the ZOSO bill debate. If these allegations are true, it could amount to serious crimes including corruption and bribe solicitation. This public disclosure, without revealing the identities of the involved senators, has cast doubts over the entire independent bench. Khan urges President Christine Kangaloo to summon all independent senators to verify the credibility of these allegations and has also called for a police investigation.
