Prime Minister Criticises Media Ethics Amidst Journalist’s Resignation

The resignation of Joshua Seemungal, a senior investigative journalist at Guardian Media, has sparked a nationwide discussion. Seemungal cited ‘organisational ethical failings’ as the reason for his departure, arguing that the investigative desk’s ability to hold powerful institutions accountable had been compromised.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar subsequently posted about Seemungal’s resignation on her official Facebook page, criticising Guardian Media Limited’s (GML) editorial practices and independence. This post further intensified the conversation, generating significant online debate about media freedom, journalistic ethics, and public trust in news organisations.

While Seemungal acknowledged the opportunities he had been granted during his tenure and thanked his former colleagues, he stated his decision was made to protect his ‘ethical integrity, peace of mind and moral compass.’ However, he did not provide detailed examples of the issues leading to his resignation. GML has yet to publicly respond to the allegations and criticisms referenced in the ongoing social media discussions.

This development has sparked wider conversations about the role of investigative journalism in Trinidad and Tobago, as well as the importance of maintaining editorial independence within media organisations. As the public discussion continues, the resignation and subsequent political reaction are likely to keep the spotlight on media accountability, transparency, and the relationship between journalism and public institutions.
