A violent incident at the Tranquillity Government Secondary School has left Alderman Wayne Griffith, the Chairman of Port-of-Spain City Corporation, nursing minor injuries but holding no grudges against his young attackers. Griffith was assaulted by students when he tried to intervene in a fight that involved almost a dozen students led by a female student.
The chairman was not only physically assaulted, but also robbed of his personal belongings including his cellphone and watch. Despite this, Griffith has publicly declared his forgiveness towards the students involved.
Griffith, who is also a father, felt compelled to intervene in the fight due to his role as the chairman of the constituency. In an unfortunate turn of events, the students turned on him instead. Griffith, however, chose not to retaliate, reminding himself that they were children.
The incident has deepened Griffith’s concerns about school violence, which he sees as escalating into a form of gang violence. He has made an official police report and is urging for punitive action to be taken against the students involved. Griffith believes that addressing this issue now will help prevent these students from becoming future criminals.
