Senior Superintendent Raymond Tong, head of the Port of Spain Division, highlighted the lack of prior application for the event, raising concerns about the safety of the public at such gatherings.
The organizer’s intent for a peaceful demonstration was acknowledged by law enforcement; however, without following the procedures to gain approval, police felt compelled to act decisively. Tong explained that the unpredictability of crowd size and behavior necessitated a strong police presence to protect citizens.
As public sentiment grows regarding police actions, some community members are questioning whether such a heavy response was an overreaction to a noble initiative aimed at reducing gang violence.
