Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles has accused the government of failing to uphold promises made to Trinidad and Tobago’s workers, marking a turbulent backdrop to this year’s Labour Day. Beckles criticized what she called a betrayal by the current administration, asserting that thousands of workers continue to face an uncertain future.
“This Labour Day, workers are grappling with economic uncertainty, having been left without employment by a government that has demonstrated little regard for their plight,” Beckles stated firmly. Her comments draw attention to what she sees as a critical lack of new job creation by the government, leaving many displaced workers without options.
Beckles recalls the profound significance of Labour Day in Trinidad and Tobago’s history, citing landmark efforts such as the Industrial Stabilisation Act of 1965, which framed collective bargaining and industrial dispute resolution. However, she stresses that the current administration is failing to protect these hard-won rights.
In addition to employment concerns, Beckles also expressed alarm over the rising cost of living and the protracted use of emergency powers. She cautioned that such powers should not infringe upon constitutional freedoms, emphasizing the importance of transparency and accountability in ongoing crime-fighting measures.
Labour Day serves as a crucial reminder of the need to safeguard freedoms such as assembly and advocacy, according to Beckles, highlighting their roles in the victories of the labour movement.
