Opposition Leader Guanipa Freed After Eight-Month Detention

After over eight months of detention, Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Pablo Guanipa has been released from prison. Guanipa, a key figure in the country’s political landscape, was arrested in May 2025 on the charge of involvement in an alleged terrorist group plotting to boycott the legislative election. His arrest sparked widespread condemnation, with many viewing it as politically motivated. His release is perceived as a result of international pressure and coincides with the National Assembly’s consideration of an amnesty law. Guanipa’s release is part of a broader wave of prisoner releases, with at least 18 political prisoners, including him, being freed on Sunday. As the volatile political climate in Venezuela continues, opposition leaders persist in their call for a comprehensive release of those they consider unjustly detained.
