Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles has spoken out in the wake of the tragic killings in Belmont, stating that the opposition is ready to collaborate with the government to address crime. The incident left two-year-old Akini Kafi, his father Akil Kafi, and Anthony Wilson dead, leaving communities in shock and grief.
Describing the situation as a ‘national crisis’, Beckles emphasized that crime is devastating families and communities across Trinidad and Tobago. She underscored the importance of prioritizing the safety of citizens and the wellbeing of youth above political interests.
Expressing her condolences to the bereaved families, Beckles stated that the entire country is mourning this tragedy. She also took the opportunity to criticize a junior government minister who made inflammatory remarks after the killings, stating that such political grandstanding and insensitivity offer no comfort to those in mourning.
Beckles closed her statement by calling for national unity and an emphasis on stronger community values. She advocated for increased support and opportunities for young people, and expressed her prayers for the families affected, and for wisdom, unity, and compassion to guide the nation through this difficult time.
