In a recent development, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Wayne Mystar has been appointed the new head of the Trinidad and Tobago Municipal Police Service (TTMPS). He replaces former TTMPS head Surrendra Sagramsingh who was put on administrative leave in the wake of a murder and a reported theft at the San Fernando Municipal Police Station. The situation was further complicated when a serving municipal police officer was among three men charged with several offences, including the murder.
Mystar’s initial plan of action revolves around stabilising the organisation, rebuilding morale, and restoring public trust in the service. This comes at a time when the service is grappling with internal strain and low morale. Mystar also highlighted the need for clearer operational structures and protocols within the TTMPS. He plans to introduce a structured communication strategy to improve public understanding of the roles of municipal police officers.
In the coming weeks, Mystar plans to personally visit all municipalities to engage with officers directly, beyond command-level briefings. He stressed the importance of supervision in preventing the development of poor habits within the force. According to him, consistent oversight is essential to nip potential issues in the bud and avoid serious breaches.
Mystar’s leadership style is set to be highly visible and engaged. He plans to lead from the front, ensuring his presence is felt out on the field. His approach is expected to be firm but fair, signaling a period of reform and recovery for the TTMPS.
