Kaia Sealy Detained Upon Arrival, Faces Charges Linked to January Incident
Kaia Sealy was taken into police custody shortly after arriving at Piarco International Airport in the early hours of Wednesday morning, according to her attorney, Fayola Sandy.
Speaking to members of the media outside the airport shortly after 2 a.m., Sandy said she had previously received assurances that Sealy would be allowed to seek medical treatment before proceeding to a police station. However, upon arrival, Sealy was detained by police officers and removed from the airport.
Sandy stated that Sealy was subsequently taken to the Arouca Police Station and later confirmed that her client is facing multiple charges arising from the police-involved shooting incident in January that resulted in the death of Joshua Samaroo.
The attorney explained that Sealy had recently been receiving medical treatment and arrived at the airport in a wheelchair. When questioned about the circumstances of the detention, including whether Sealy had been handcuffed, Sandy said she had no direct information, as her client had been taken to a restricted area of the airport shortly after disembarking.
According to Sandy, Sealy’s mother reported that the officers involved conducted themselves professionally and that the interaction was not confrontational.
The arrest follows months of public attention surrounding the January incident, which sparked widespread discussion and debate across Trinidad and Tobago. Authorities have not yet publicly released full details regarding the specific charges laid against Sealy.
Sandy indicated that the next step in the process will be Sealy’s appearance before the court, where the charges are expected to be formally addressed.
As legal proceedings are now underway, the allegations remain before the courts and no findings of guilt have been made. Further information is expected to emerge as the matter progresses through the judicial system.
