Immigration Employee Allegedly Operated Lucrative Passport Appointment Scam

An employee of Trinidad and Tobago’s Immigration Division is currently under investigation over allegations of operating a scheme that involved charging citizens for passport appointment slots amid ongoing difficulties securing appointments through the online system.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the employee allegedly exploited the shortage of available appointments over the past six months, collecting between $1,000 and $2,500 from individuals seeking faster access to passport services.

The alleged operation reportedly involved the employee booking appointments under their own name and allowing paying individuals to enter the office as authorized guests. Once inside, the individuals were reportedly able to conduct passport-related business despite not having legitimate appointments of their own.

Investigators are said to be examining CCTV footage which allegedly shows the employee receiving envelopes believed to contain cash payments. Sources claim the exchanges frequently took place near the elevators on the building’s ground floor, raising concerns about the level of planning and coordination involved.

Questions have also emerged regarding how unauthorized individuals were allegedly able to gain access to restricted areas of the building, including the third floor where immigration services are conducted. Investigators are reportedly exploring whether additional personnel may have assisted in facilitating entry or bypassing normal appointment procedures.

The allegations have sparked concern over the integrity and security of the passport appointment system, particularly as members of the public continue to experience difficulties securing appointments through official channels.

Authorities are continuing investigations into the matter as concerns grow about vulnerabilities within the system and the potential impact on public trust in the Immigration Division.
