Opposition Chief Whip Tabitha Sarabo-Halley has stated that Guyana cannot effectively address race relations without reliable data on issues such as exclusion, discrimination, access to opportunity, and trust among communities. Speaking at the Ethnic Relations Commission’s National Symposium, which focused on the theme “Guyana at 60: Unity, Diversity and the Path Forward,” Sarabo-Halley urged attendees to reflect on the progress made since the country’s independence and the ERC’s two decades of existence.
She acknowledged that while there has been progress in terms of increased interaction across ethnic lines in various sectors, including schools, workplaces, and communities, this should not be mistaken for success. Sarabo-Halley pointed out that race continues to influence how many Guyanese perceive politics, economic opportunities, public policy, and national development.
Many communities reportedly feel excluded from the benefits of development. Sarabo-Halley, representing African Guyanese perspectives, expressed concern that the country’s oil wealth has not led to significant economic improvements for the general population. She also noted that Indo-Guyanese individuals often feel disconnected from the prosperity discussed in national dialogues, particularly as some citizens face rising costs and economic challenges while a small group accumulates wealth.
Additionally, she highlighted the situation of Indigenous communities, who continue to encounter obstacles in accessing development, healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. Sarabo-Halley emphasized that if multiple groups feel marginalized, the issue extends beyond individual grievances.
She called for the ERC to take a more active role in addressing these challenges, noting that its constitutional mandate includes identifying barriers to participation, studying ethnic relations, and making recommendations to the National Assembly. Sarabo-Halley suggested that comprehensive ethnic relations reports should be produced regularly to analyze various factors such as employment patterns and perceptions of discrimination.
Despite the challenges, she expressed optimism, indicating that more Guyanese seem willing to move beyond ethnicity-defined politics. She concluded by stating that the next 60 years will necessitate trust, inclusion, and institutions ready to confront difficult truths, urging that the national motto, “One People, One Nation, One Destiny,” should become a tangible reality.
