President Irfaan Ali and Nazar “Shell” Mohamed are currently involved in a public dispute concerning allegations of blackmail, farm ownership, and communications that the President claims were intended to pressure him regarding ongoing extradition proceedings. The situation escalated on Sunday following the release of a video by Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed, which made several allegations about Ali’s farm.
President Ali has rejected these claims, asserting that they are false. He alleged that prior to the video’s release, he received multiple communications from the Mohamed family, who are under U.S. sanctions and indictment, threatening to disclose information unless certain “amends” were made. According to Ali, one of the latest messages came from Nazar Mohamed last week, in which Nazar purportedly demanded that the President reconcile with the family or face the release of recordings related to his farm.
Ali expressed his willingness to make these messages public so that citizens can form their own opinions on the matter. He emphasized that he would not succumb to pressure or blackmail from anyone. The President defended his ownership of the farm, stating that it was acquired before he took office and that banking records and official documents can confirm this. He also noted that the farm has not received any special benefits or assistance from the Government of Guyana and that no state funds or public resources were involved in the investment. Furthermore, he mentioned that the farm was declared to the Integrity Commission as required by law.
In response, Nazar Mohamed has strongly denied the President’s allegations. In a statement to Kaieteur News, he rejected the claim of blackmail and challenged President Ali to release the full communication he sent. “I categorically reject the president’s claim that I attempted to blackmail him,” Nazar stated. He insisted that the message contained no threats or references to blackmail and invited the public to review the communication to judge the facts themselves. The ongoing dispute has both parties calling for the release of the communication at the center of the controversy.
