Guyana: President Ali Hosts Sunrise Service for Guyana’s 60th Independence Celebrations

President Dr. Irfaan Ali hosted a pre-Independence Anniversary Sunrise Glorification Service on the lawns of State House in Georgetown, Guyana, early Monday morning. This event was part of the celebrations marking Guyana’s 60th year of independence and aimed to promote religious convergence and national solidarity.

The service brought together leaders from the Christian, Hindu, and Muslim communities, serving as a spiritual prelude to the evening’s flag-raising festivities. It emphasized shared moral values, peace, and national unity as essential elements of Guyana’s ongoing economic transformation.

As dawn broke over the capital, the atmosphere at State House was one of reflection and reverence, honoring six decades of independence and the development of a unique Guyanese identity. Representatives from the three major religious communities took turns at the podium to offer prayers for the country’s protection and prosperity.

  • The Hindu Community: Pandit leaders invoked blessings from Bhagwan Ganesha, the remover of obstacles, and Bhagwan Surya, the sun deity, praying for a clear path for the nation’s leadership and development projects.
  • The Muslim Community: Imams led prayers for peace and institutional strength, honoring ancestors who fought for civil liberties, concluding with a collective plea for blessings on the nation.
  • The Christian Community: Ministers and pastors delivered a message focused on cultural harmony, rejecting political and racial division, and praying for unity in Guyana.

In his address, President Ali highlighted that Guyana’s resilience is not solely based on oil wealth or infrastructure but on mutual respect and cultural diversity. He emphasized that the Sunrise Glorification Service served as a reminder that the nation’s progress relies on a shared vision of inclusivity and unity as it celebrates its Diamond Jubilee under the theme “The Homecoming.”
