Guyana: President Ali Emphasizes Importance of US-Guyana Partnership

President Irfaan Ali has emphasized the importance of safeguarding the relationship between Guyana and the United States, cautioning against any forces that may seek to undermine the partnership the two nations have developed. His remarks were made during the United States Embassy’s celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Ali noted that the relationship between Guyana and the U.S. is not automatic; rather, it has been cultivated through trust, friendship, mutual respect, and years of dedicated effort. He stated that the partnership was achieved through hard work and a thorough understanding of each other’s perspectives.

During his address, Ali urged both nations to protect their relationship from any elements that may attempt to disrupt their progress. He highlighted that the partnership embodies the principle of self-determination as outlined in the United States Declaration of Independence and characterized current Guyana-U.S. relations as the strongest they have ever been.

Looking ahead, Ali expressed a desire to enhance security cooperation with the United States, clarifying that the goal is to promote peace rather than aggression. He stated, “The cooperation is not sought for aggressive purposes. We harbor no ambitions beyond our borders, and we seek no domination over others.”

Ali further explained that the partnership aims to safeguard Guyana’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and natural resources from external coercion or intimidation. He reiterated Guyana’s commitment to peace, stability, and development for its citizens, while also striving to be a good neighbor and a responsible global citizen.

In his remarks, Ali described Guyana’s diplomatic approach as straightforward and based on clear principles, asserting that countries sharing geographic space with Guyana can rely on its support for international law, democracy, and the rule of law. He acknowledged the United States as a trusted partner and expressed optimism for continued growth in cooperation across various sectors, including security, investment, healthcare, and development.

Ali concluded by affirming the strength of the relationship, stating, “Tonight, I declare the prosperity of our relationship. I declare the respect of our relationship, and I declare the honor of our relationship. We are your friends. We are your partners.”
