Aubrey Norton, the leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), has announced that his party will not participate in efforts to protect Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed from possible extradition. In a recent interview, Norton emphasized that while opposition parties should collaborate on issues of national interest, such cooperation should not be based on personal legal challenges faced by individuals.
Norton articulated that the collaboration among opposition forces must be grounded in principles, public interest, and the welfare of the citizens of Guyana. He stated, “Let me say it here and now, I believe the opposition needs to work together, but not by burying our heads in the sand.” His comments arise amidst ongoing discussions regarding Mohamed’s role as Opposition Leader and the serious allegations against him.
Rejecting the notion that Mohamed’s financial resources qualify him as a viable political challenger, Norton remarked, “There were many who were saying, ‘Mohamed gon take the fight to them.’ So I find it fascinating that now you’re saying he ain’t got fight, but he got money. Garbage.” He asserted that effective political leadership requires more than just wealth, emphasizing the importance of moral conviction, commitment to the populace, and personal credibility.
Norton further stated that if the allegations against Mohamed, which suggest he may have deprived Guyana of significant revenue, are accurate, then acts of public generosity cannot negate the potential harm to national development. He argued that political leaders should be evaluated based on their actions and their genuine contributions to the country’s interests.
While Norton supports the idea of greater opposition cooperation, he clarified that this should not involve ignoring serious allegations against Mohamed. He expressed concern that Mohamed’s primary focus seems to be on avoiding extradition rather than promoting a national agenda for the people of Guyana. Norton declared, “Mohamed’s interest here is to ensure that he isn’t extradited. We don’t have an interest in that.” He reiterated that the PNCR’s priority is to advocate for policies that enhance the lives of citizens, stating, “We have an interest in promoting the development of the people of Guyana.” Norton concluded by asserting that his party would not engage in efforts aimed at shielding someone facing serious allegations of misconduct, indicating a clear stance on the boundaries of opposition unity as discussions about a broader anti-PPP/C coalition continue.
