The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has increased its efforts to enhance Ebola preparedness across the Americas. This decision comes in response to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) due to ongoing outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.
Currently, there have been no reported cases of Ebola in the Americas, and the risk level remains low. However, PAHO has activated its Incident Management System to facilitate regional coordination and ensure that countries are prepared to respond quickly if an imported case occurs.
Dr. Ciro Ugarte, PAHO’s Director of Health Emergencies, emphasized the importance of maintaining preparedness despite the absence of confirmed cases in the region. He stated that while the Americas are currently unaffected by Ebola, proactive measures are essential to safeguard public health.
