Authorities in Guyana have conducted screenings of more than 6,000 secondary school students as part of efforts to address substance use among young people. The findings from these screenings have raised significant concerns regarding the prevalence of substance use in this demographic.
Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony reported that 43% of the students screened had consumed alcohol, 32% had vaped, and 5% had used cannabis. These statistics were shared on Friday, coinciding with the observance of the International Day Against Illicit Trafficking and Drug Abuse.
Dr. Anthony emphasized the need for stronger prevention programs, particularly within schools, stating, “These results are alarming.” He highlighted the importance of developing early interventions to address the issue before it escalates further.
The minister pointed out that addressing substance misuse requires a coordinated response from multiple agencies, both locally and internationally. He also cautioned that alcohol consumption can serve as a gateway to the use of more potent drugs.
In light of these findings, Dr. Anthony urged the Ministries of Health and Education to collaborate in helping students resist peer pressure and make safer choices regarding substance use. Additionally, the Ministry of Health is working with Mount Sinai to enhance treatment services by training local professionals in addiction medicine.
Dr. Anthony reiterated that the primary focus must be on protecting children and preventing harm before it becomes more challenging to reverse.
