Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has expressed concerns regarding the government’s recent Cabinet outreach in Region Seven, emphasizing the need for tangible solutions for residents rather than what he perceives as a political exercise focused on optics. In a public statement, Mohamed criticized the PPP/C administration’s visit to various communities, noting that many longstanding issues remain unresolved.
He remarked, “I noticed you sent your entire Cabinet to Region Seven for the normal poppy show, just for optics, not to fix problems.” Mohamed pointed out that many of the issues currently being addressed by government officials were previously raised during his own visits to the region.
He highlighted several concerns from residents in Isseneru, including high airfare prices, land access issues, water shortages, poor road conditions, and unreliable electricity supply. He also mentioned that pensioners are required to travel to Bartica to collect their payments, which can impose a significant financial burden on elderly residents.
“Pensioners are forced to travel to Bartica to collect pensions, as no visits have been made by social services to make pension payouts for the year,” he stated, adding that the travel costs could equal nearly one month’s pension.
Mohamed further noted that despite significant investments in water wells, many residents still lack reliable access to water. He called for the establishment of a new primary school, all-weather roads, a water ambulance, and the provision of electricity that has been promised for years.
In Kangaruma, he reported that residents raised concerns about the conversion of private lands into mining areas without proper consultation. He also pointed out the deteriorating condition of the local school building and the need for new teachers’ quarters, which have not yet been commissioned despite their construction last year.
Additionally, he mentioned that the school feeding program is under financial strain due to rising food costs, and students are currently traveling by boat without adequate shelter. He emphasized the necessity for a proper school boat with a shed to protect students during inclement weather.
Mohamed also highlighted issues such as a non-functioning village well, lack of birth certificates for many villagers, and unanswered requests for firearm licenses from village leaders. He concluded by stating that residents of Region Seven should not be struggling for basic services like water, electricity, roads, schools, and health services, especially given the country’s access to substantial national budgets. He urged the government to prioritize addressing the concerns raised by the communities.
