Guyana: NGSA Pass Rates Show Improvement Across All Subjects

Recent results from the 2026 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) indicate an improvement in pass rates across all four subject areas, according to Dr. Nicole Manning, Director of Operations at the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC). During the official release of the results at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre in Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown, Dr. Manning noted that the year-on-year improvements reflect the positive impact of educational interventions.

Education Minister Sonia Parag reported that 15,706 students participated in this year’s assessment, marking the best performance of Grade Six students in Guyana’s history. She stated that the results not only surpass those of the past five years but also set a new record for the country. The results have met regional benchmarks when compared to similar assessments across the Caribbean.

Dr. Manning highlighted that the overall percentage of students achieving 50 percent or more increased in all subjects compared to 2025. The English Language recorded the highest pass rate at 73.08 percent, up from 69.25 percent in the previous year. Other subjects also showed improvements: Social Studies increased from 64.77 percent to 65.28 percent, Science from 63.70 percent to 65.38 percent, and Mathematics saw the largest gain, rising from 55.51 percent to 59.80 percent.

Additionally, there was a notable increase in the number of students achieving full marks across subjects, particularly in English, Social Studies, Science, and Mathematics. No candidates received zero marks in English or Social Studies, and Mathematics had the lowest number of zero scores in five years. Dr. Manning attributed these improvements to rigorous quality assurance measures implemented during the marking process, which included a three-tiered monitoring system and independent reviews.

The Ministry of Education has announced that the next NGSA is scheduled for April 14 to 15, 2027, with results to be released on June 25, 2027.
