Kiskadee Watch, a new online newspaper in Guyana, has announced its intention to operate using a different funding model rather than relying on subscriptions. The publication, which is led by former Stabroek News Editor-in-Chief Anand Persaud, aims to draw inspiration from the financing models of the UK Guardian and National Public Radio in the USA. This hybrid model will be based on share ownership and contributions from individuals, organizations, foundations, civil society, and the business sector.
The content of Kiskadee Watch will be freely accessible to readers, although it has not clarified whether there will be a charge for its anticipated high-quality weekly printed newspaper, which is expected to launch by the end of the year. The announcement comes in the wake of the cessation of operations by Guyana Publications Inc., the publisher of Stabroek News, which cited high operational costs and a significant shift in advertising from print to digital platforms.
Kiskadee Watch emphasized the importance of press freedom and free expression, stating that these principles come at a considerable cost. The publication has invited contributions from Guyanese both locally and abroad, as well as from anyone interested in supporting press freedom and accountability in the region. A bank account for public contributions will be shared in the future.
The organization aims to maintain a free platform for readers across Guyana and the diaspora. Kiskadee Watch also expressed its commitment to building on the legacy of professional experience and integrity from the now-closed Stabroek News, promising to be a trusted, independent, fact-based news source that upholds editorial freedom and promotes democratic discourse.
The name ‘Kiskadee’ was chosen for its masthead because the bird is common and familiar throughout Guyana. The publication noted that the kiskadee is resilient and adaptable, much like the people of Guyana, thriving in challenging environments.
The steering committee for Kiskadee Watch includes Janette Bulkan, Rhett Gordon, Jocelyne Josiah, GHK Lall, Cheryl Springer, and Alissa Trotz.
