The National Cultural Centre (NCC) in Guyana is scheduled for a significant restoration and modernization this year, according to junior culture minister Stephen Jacobs. This announcement follows calls from cultural advocate Andre Wiltshire for the government to address the facility’s deteriorating condition.
Minister Jacobs stated that the overhaul will commence after the completion of the design and procurement phases. The government, in collaboration with technical consultants, is currently working on the design stage, which aims to enhance both the external appearance and critical internal facilities of the NCC.
Planned upgrades include improvements to dressing rooms and washroom facilities, aimed at creating a more comfortable environment for users. Jacobs emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring the NCC, highlighting its importance to the nation.
Located on Homestretch Avenue in Georgetown, the NCC serves as Guyana’s primary venue for major cultural events and performing arts. In 2022, the government completed an interior modernization project that included the installation of 2,002 new theatre seats, along with modern lighting and improved acoustics.
However, Wiltshire has raised concerns regarding the facility’s communication systems, sound reliability, and backstage limitations. He noted that the communication system has been non-functional since the late 1980s, and the sound system is inadequate, leading to additional costs for producers.
Additionally, Wiltshire pointed out issues with backstage space, restroom facilities, and the overall maintenance of the building. He suggested the formation of a National Cultural Centre Board of Management to oversee operations and recommended hiring a professionally trained theatre manager and technical staff.
He also proposed strategies for marketing and revenue optimization, including the use of digital assets for event promotion and exploring public-private partnerships for sustainability.
