Guyana: Mohamed Questions How Ali Could Afford Multi-Billion-Dollar Ranch

Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed has raised questions regarding President Irfaan Ali’s financial capability to acquire what he describes as a multi-billion-dollar private ranch located in Long Creek. In a statement released on Sunday, Mohamed estimated the market value of the property to be over G$5 billion, which he argues is inconsistent with the President’s official income.

He pointed out that Ali’s monthly presidential salary is approximately G$3.7 million and emphasized that the President has spent his career in public service. Mohamed alleged that the 150-acre estate was developed within three years of Ali assuming office in 2020, suggesting that this development represents an abuse of public office.

Additionally, the Opposition Leader connected this issue to the proposed Former Presidents (Benefits and Other Facilities) Bill. He contended that the bill is intended to allow Ali to continue receiving benefits after leaving office, which includes provisions for unlimited electricity, water, security, technical and clerical staff, and state-maintained vehicles.

According to Mohamed, these benefits could potentially be used to maintain the President’s private estate at the expense of taxpayers. He claimed that the legislation is being advanced to provide Ali with “unlimited electricity and water supply among other perks,” which he believes could support the ranch.

Mohamed has called for the President’s immediate resignation, accusing Ali of amassing significant personal wealth while many citizens of Guyana continue to experience economic difficulties. He characterized the situation as a “lasting mark of shame” and alleged that Ali would be remembered as Guyana’s “most corrupt and selfish President.”
