Guyana: Mobile AI System to Track Traffic Ticket Evaders in Guyana

President Irfaan Ali announced on May 22, 2026, that an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based policing system is being implemented in Guyana to track and intercept vehicles with unpaid traffic tickets. The mobile unit will operate on the roads, automatically identifying vehicles that have outstanding traffic offences. During a pilot phase earlier this week, the system successfully identified 250 vehicles.

Dr. Ali emphasized that the system is designed to be tamper-proof, ensuring that no human interference can occur. In addition to tracking traffic violations, the AI policing system will analyze the behavior and intentions of individuals in public spaces. The initiative includes plans to install at least 25,000 additional cameras across the country.

The mobile units will be capable of being stationed in various locations, providing 360-degree coverage to monitor traffic offenses effectively. The President described this technology as part of the latest advancements being applied in the country.

Furthermore, the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system will be integrated with an intelligent traffic management system, which will feature sensor-enabled infrastructure. These sensors will facilitate the automatic adjustment of traffic lights based on real-time vehicle counts, with installations expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Plans also include replacing front desk police services at stations with a multilingual app that will enable online crime reporting, electronic tracking, and report generation. Kiosks will be established for applying for police clearance and other documents. Dr. Ali noted that partnerships with INTERPOL, the Regional Security System, the United States, and other technology partners will enhance the efficiency of the security system.
