Kiskadee Watch, a new online daily newspaper, is scheduled to launch on June 14, 2026. The publication will offer content that is freely accessible to readers both in Guyana and internationally. Anand Persaud, the former Editor-in-Chief of Stabroek News, will lead the initiative, supported by a team of former Stabroek News staff members, who have contributed to a legacy of professional journalism over the past 35 years.
The establishment of Kiskadee Watch follows the closure of Stabroek News, which raised concerns regarding the availability of credible news reporting in Guyana. A collective of Guyanese individuals, both domestically and in the diaspora, along with others invested in the future of the country, collaborated to create this new news platform.
The organization aims to re-establish a trusted, independent, and fact-based news institution in Guyana that promotes editorial freedom and enhances democratic discourse. The name “Kiskadee Watch” was selected due to the kiskadee bird, which is prevalent throughout Guyana. The bird is noted for its resilience and adaptability, qualities that the newspaper aspires to embody.
Kiskadee Watch will initially function as a free online newspaper via its website, with plans to introduce a high-quality weekly printed edition by the end of the year. The financing model will be inspired by the approaches of the UK Guardian and National Public Radio in the United States, utilizing a hybrid structure that includes shared ownership and contributions from individuals, organizations, foundations, civil society, and the business sector.
The organization emphasizes that defending press freedom and free expression incurs significant costs and encourages contributions from Guyanese at home and abroad to maintain the platform’s accessibility. Members of the public will have the opportunity to contribute or subscribe through the newspaper’s website or a bank account that will be announced later. Additionally, those interested in subscribing, advertising, or donating are invited to reach out via email.
The statement regarding the launch was issued by the steering committee of Kiskadee Watch, which includes Janette Bulkan, Rhett Gordon, Jocelyne Josiah, GHK Lall, Cheryl Springer, and Alissa Trotz. The introduction of Kiskadee Watch is anticipated to provide a new perspective in Guyana’s media landscape, particularly amid ongoing discussions about press freedom, accountability, and access to reliable information.
