Guyana: Iswe Sentenced To 25 Years For Killing Girlfriend

The Demerara High Court in Georgetown, Guyana, has sentenced Shaquawn “Iswe” Alleyne to 25 years in prison for the murder of his 20-year-old girlfriend, Shonette Dover. The case has drawn attention to the issue of intimate partner violence in the country. Justice Sandil Kissoon, who presided over the case, expressed strong condemnation of domestic violence and emphasized the judiciary’s role in deterring such crimes.

During the proceedings, the court heard details of the circumstances surrounding Dover’s death, which occurred in her home and in the presence of her 15-year-old sister. After the shooting, Alleyne did not seek medical assistance for Dover and instead concealed her death by transporting her body and burying it in a shallow grave behind his residence in Canvas City, Wismar, Linden.

Justice Kissoon noted that Alleyne’s actions prolonged the suffering of Dover’s family, who were misled into believing she was missing while he maintained a false narrative about her whereabouts. Following the incident, Alleyne fled to Suriname but was later apprehended and extradited back to Guyana to face charges.

In his ruling, Justice Kissoon described the crime as severe and highlighted the emotional toll on the victim’s family. Alleyne expressed remorse in court, stating he did not intend to cause harm and asked for forgiveness. The judge calculated the sentence starting from a baseline of 37 years and 6 months but reduced it to 25 years due to Alleyne’s guilty plea. The sentence must be served in full, with time already spent in remand deducted from the total.
