The first high-pressure process pipe fabrication scope for a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel has been built in Guyana by local companies, according to ExxonMobil sub-contractors. This project involved the participation of Guyanese welders who contributed to the development and qualification of the welding procedures used. Additionally, personnel achieved ABS certification, enhancing the pool of internationally qualified technical talent in Guyana.
Initially executed for the FPSO Liza Unity, similar fabrication scopes are expected to be expanded to other FPSOs constructed by both SBM Offshore and other builders. This initiative highlights the long-term benefits of capacity-building efforts in the region. The Water Injection Riser Depressurization (WIRD) project was completed in line with internationally recognized offshore standards for the FPSO Liza Unity by Friedlander Guyana, a newcomer to the local industrial fabrication sector.
The project was carried out by SBM Offshore Guyana in collaboration with ExxonMobil Guyana’s Brownfield Projects team. Friedlander Guyana’s Director and Co-owner, Dr. Carla Crawford, acknowledged the hard work of the teams involved, stating that they successfully met demanding technical requirements and demonstrated the capabilities of Guyanese talent and companies in delivering specialized offshore projects.
SBM Offshore noted that the fabrication of the pipe systems, designed to withstand high water pressures, was completed with zero weld defects and repairs, showcasing the quality of the local workforce. During a celebration event, SBM Offshore Guyana’s General Manager Martin Cheong emphasized the significance of the WIRD project as a demonstration of the potential of local talent when supported by world-class partners.
To execute the project, Friedlander Guyana underwent a thorough qualification process, including vendor audits and extensive material testing under the supervision of American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) representatives. The project encompassed various activities such as cutting, fitting, non-destructive testing, hydrotesting, blasting, and painting, all adhering to international offshore standards. ExxonMobil Guyana’s Production Manager Huzefa Ali highlighted the importance of developing local technical capabilities to meet the industry’s long-term needs, reaffirming ExxonMobil’s commitment to investing in local workforce development.
Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat praised the collaborative efforts behind the project and its positive impact on national development, expressing optimism for the future of Guyana’s energy sector and the opportunities it presents for local and foreign investment.
