Former professional boxer Howard “Battersea Bomber” Eastman has been sentenced to 48 months in prison after pleading guilty to possession of marijuana. Eastman, 55, appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where he admitted to possession of 265 grams of cannabis. He was arrested last Friday at Pitt Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice, after allegedly being found with the prohibited substance.
Initially, Eastman was charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to Section 5(1)(a)(i) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Control Act. During the sentencing, the court noted that Eastman is unemployed, has no fixed place of abode, and is a repeat offender, having previously appeared before the court for a similar matter. Taking these factors into account, Magistrate Matthias sentenced him to four years imprisonment and imposed a fine of three times the market value of the 265 grams of cannabis.
Eastman was once a prominent figure in Guyana’s boxing scene, with a career spanning two decades from 1994 to 2014, during which he represented Guyana internationally and gained national recognition.
In addition to Eastman, two other individuals were sentenced in connection with related narcotics matters. Clarence Crawford, an 18-year-old fisherman from Islington Village, East Bank Berbice, received a 12-month prison sentence after pleading guilty. The magistrate considered his age and status as a first-time offender when determining his sentence. He was also fined three times the market value of 195 grams of cannabis.
George Green, known as “Quamy,” a 39-year-old coconut vendor from Howard’s Alley, New Amsterdam, was sentenced to three years imprisonment. The court recognized him as a repeat offender, but his sentence was reduced by one-third due to his guilty plea. He was also fined three times the market value of 193 grams of cannabis. Green was arrested at Main and Nicolay Streets, New Amsterdam, Berbice. The prosecution was handled by Sergeant Clarke.
