A 61-year-old woman, identified as Bibi Ramprashad, also known as “Zeena,” died early Tuesday morning in a fire that consumed her home in No. 2 Settlement, Blairmont, West Bank Berbice. At the time of the incident, she was reportedly alone in the house. Ramprashad, who relied on a wheelchair for mobility due to complications from a diabetic foot condition, was unable to escape the flames.
Her husband, 65-year-old Looknauth Ramprashad, known as “Prame,” was working in the backlands of the community when the fire broke out. The Guyana Fire Service received a report of the fire at approximately 5:05 a.m. Firefighters from the Onverwagt Fire Station were dispatched to the scene promptly. However, by the time they arrived, the fire had already caused significant damage, and Ramprashad did not survive.
The circumstances surrounding the incident have heightened the grief felt by family members and residents, as Ramprashad’s physical condition would have made it challenging for her to escape without assistance. An investigation has been initiated by authorities to determine the cause of the fire. The community of Blairmont is currently in mourning, and investigators are working to ascertain how the woman became trapped inside her home during the blaze.
As the investigation continues, the local community is reflecting on the tragedy and the impact it has had on their neighborhood.
