Guyana: Shaquawn Alleyne Pleads Guilty to Murder of Shonette Dover

Shaquawn Alleyne, also known as “Iwse,” has pleaded guilty to the murder of his girlfriend, Shonette Dover, in a case that dates back to March 2021. Alleyne appeared before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court on Tuesday, where he formally entered his plea.

The indictment presented by State Counsel Corbin detailed the circumstances of the murder. When asked how he wished to plead, Alleyne responded with a clear, “Guilty.” The court confirmed that he had signed a written statement acknowledging the facts of the case and that he understood the implications of his guilty plea.

In light of this admission, Justice Kissoon has ordered the preparation of several reports prior to sentencing. A probation report will be compiled to provide insight into Alleyne’s background and personal circumstances. Additionally, a psychiatric assessment will be conducted by a qualified professional to evaluate Alleyne’s mental health.

Both reports are expected to be submitted to the court by June 16. The prosecution has also been instructed to prepare a statement that outlines any aggravating factors related to the case, along with victim impact statements from Dover’s family and loved ones.

Alleyne’s defense attorneys, Fung-a-Fat and Dominique Bess, are anticipated to submit their own statements regarding mitigating factors that they wish the court to consider during sentencing. Furthermore, the Guyana Prison Service has been tasked with providing a report on Alleyne’s conduct while he has been in remand.

Sentencing for Alleyne has been scheduled for June 17, 2026.
