Ralph Gonsalves says he considers some of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar’s rhetoric concerning CARICOM to be unnecessarily divisive, while insisting their political disagreements have not changed the respect he has for her.
Gonsalves specifically said he disagrees with Persad-Bissessar’s position that the Caribbean is not a zone of peace, describing that view as a misconception.
Later in the interview, he explained that the Caribbean’s designation as a zone of peace refers primarily to peaceful relations between states and an aspiration to preserve those conditions, rather than suggesting that individual countries are free from crime.
Despite the disagreement, Gonsalves said he would not verbally abuse Persad-Bissessar and would continue speaking about her respectfully.
He praised her rise from humble beginnings through what he described as discipline, hard work and intelligence in a male-dominated political environment, calling her political journey remarkable.
