The High Court of Guyana has issued a ruling stating that the Government acted improperly when it discontinued funding to the International Decade for People of African Descent Assembly-Guyana (IDPADA-G). Chief Justice (ag) Roxane George, S.C. delivered the decision, which mandates that the organisation be paid the outstanding balance of its 2022 subvention.
This ruling follows the Government’s controversial decision in 2022 to halt funding to IDPADA-G, a move that led to legal proceedings and public debate regarding the legality of the funding withdrawal. In a statement released by IDPADA-G, it was noted that the court found fault with the abrupt termination of the annual subvention and ordered payment for the remaining months of 2022.
During the judgment, the Chief Justice acknowledged the considerable delay in reaching a decision and expressed apologies to the involved parties for the time taken. IDPADA-G characterized the ruling as a significant outcome that has impacted its operations and the communities it serves. The withheld funds are described as outstanding obligations owed to employees, grantees, and service providers.
IDPADA-G emphasized that the payment of the remaining 2022 subvention is crucial for settling these commitments and alleviating some of the hardship caused by the funding cut. Despite the discontinuation of the subvention, the organisation continued its efforts to support the objectives of the United Nations International Decade for People of African Descent and remained active in promoting the social, cultural, economic, and developmental interests of people of African descent in Guyana.
