Guyana: Construction Worker Charged with Possession of 23 AK-47 Assault Rifles

A Venezuelan man has been charged with the possession of 23 AK-47 assault rifles and has been remanded to prison, according to the Guyana Police Force. The individual, identified as Jonathan David Gans, 27, a construction worker from Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara, was arraigned on Monday following his arrest on Thursday, June 11.

Gans faces charges of possession of a firearm without a license and possession of ammunition without a license. He was apprehended in Schoonard, West Bank Demerara, in connection with the alleged illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. During his court appearance at the Wales Magistrate’s Court, Gans pleaded not guilty to the charges presented by the prosecution.

Magistrate Rondell Weever presided over the case, and following the plea, Gans was remanded to prison. The next court date for the matter has been set for July 14.

In a related development, another individual named Randy Jagdeo surrendered to police on Sunday, June 14, as part of the ongoing investigation into the seizure of the firearms and over 500 rounds of ammunition. Authorities have also expressed interest in locating Orlando Gabriel in connection with unlawful possession of firearms.

This incident marks the second significant arms bust in Guyana within a month, with the first occurring on May 22 in Berbice, where 10 AK-47 rifles were discovered. The police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding these incidents.
