Guyana: Construction of Canal Delayed Due to House on Proposed Path in Guyana

Efforts to provide flood relief to residents of Lancaster Village in Berbice, Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), have encountered a setback due to a house located in the proposed path of a new canal. The National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDC) has reported that the construction of the canal, which is intended to alleviate flooding in the area, cannot proceed until the house is addressed.

The NDC has been working to find alternative housing for the occupants of the house, identified as an unemployed mother, but these efforts have not yet succeeded. The presence of the house has raised concerns about the impact on vulnerable communities that are in need of immediate flood relief.

The canal project is seen as a crucial step in managing water drainage and preventing future flooding in the region. Local authorities are now faced with the challenge of balancing the needs of the residents with the urgency of the flood relief efforts.

The situation remains under review as stakeholders seek a resolution that will allow the canal construction to move forward while addressing the housing issue. The NDC continues to explore options to expedite the process, emphasizing the importance of the canal for the overall flood management strategy in the area.
