Guyana: Bombing Suspect Withdraws Guilty Plea Amid New Developments

In a significant development in the Regent Street gas station bombing case, Daniel Alexander Ramirez Poedemo, a Venezuelan national, has informed the court that he no longer wishes to plead guilty. Previously, Ramirez Poedemo had admitted to Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty that he was solely responsible for the bombing that occurred in October 2025, resulting in the death of six-year-old Soraya Bourne.

On Wednesday, the court was updated that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) intends to proceed with terrorism charges against Ramirez Poedemo and three other Venezuelan nationals who are also charged in connection with the incident. The co-accused individuals are Alexander Bettencourt, Jhonny Boodram, and Kystal LaCruz.

Following the announcement regarding the DPP’s actions, Ramirez Poedemo retracted his earlier admission of guilt. Consequently, Acting Chief Magistrate McGusty stated that paper committal proceedings for the case will commence on June 8 at 1:30 p.m. at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. During these proceedings, the court will review the statements, reports, and documentary evidence related to the case.

The magistrate will assess whether there is sufficient evidence for the accused to proceed to trial in the High Court. This latest development alters the trajectory of the case, as the prosecution will now advance against all four Venezuelan nationals on terrorism-related charges.

The bombing has garnered significant attention due to the tragic loss of the child and the serious nature of the allegations. In April, two Guyanese men, Wayne Corriea and Ramesh Pramdeo, were acquitted of any involvement after Magistrate Alisha George determined there was inadequate evidence linking them to the bombing. Conversely, Venezuelan national Jennifer Rodrigues was ordered to stand trial in the High Court after sufficient evidence was found against her.

With the prime suspect retracting his guilty plea, the case is set to move forward through the paper committal process, where it will be determined if Ramirez Poedemo and the other accused will face a judge and jury.
